The story of this wave buoy's unreliability began in August 2024 when it started transmitting erroneous data, leading to its offline status in September of the same year. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) took a staggering nine months to get it back online, attributing the delay to a supply issue with a specialist mooring part sourced from Canada. However, this fix only lasted five months, as a mooring failure caused the buoy to break free and wash up on Kangaroo Island, putting it out of commission for six weeks.
The latest issue, which occurred during a stormy weekend, has raised concerns among those who rely on the buoy's data. Ben Barnes, the chairperson of the SA Professional Fishers Association, a fifth-generation Spencer Gulf fisher, emphasizes the importance of accurate and reliable information. He notes that most fishers in the industry now use modern technology through phone apps to gauge conditions, but the buoy's data is still crucial. According to Barnes, if the buoy is not working, it puts lives at risk, as people may rely on false information and make dangerous decisions.
The BOM, however, remains confident that the latest issue is not due to another mooring failure and that the buoy is still in its operational position. They assure the public that wave buoys are designed to withstand extreme ocean conditions, but acknowledge that failures can still occur. The cost of repairs, which has not yet been determined, will be assessed once the buoy is retrieved.
